Desiree Caldwell was the second born to Mr. and Mrs. Caldwell. Her sister, Amelia, was ten minutes older. Desiree and her family lived in the Shadow Realm, but they were far from evil. In fact, their parents opposed the Shadow Walker and spent much of their time avoiding his grasp. The Shadow Walker didn't have anyone in his army with powers like the Caldwells. And he couldn't tolerate someone saying no to him. 

One night, when Desiree and Amelia were only six, the Shadow Walker sent his demons into their house. Mr. Caldwell ushered the girls to safety while his wife held the creatures off. After telling Desiree and Amelia to not come out until it was safe, he went to help his wife...

After what seemed like hours, Amelia stepped out of the closet they were hiding in. Holding Desiree's hand tight, they made their way to the living room. And there, lying on the floor, were Mr. and Mrs. Caldwell. Their life forces had been drained. It was right then that Desiree grew up at once and decided that her and her sister could no longer stay in that particular part of the Shadow Realm anymore. Luckily, Amelia remembered where their parents emergency money was. Desiree grabbed a family photo and and packed her things. Amelia did the same and the girls left their old house.

When the Caldwell twins turned 16, they began to notice some changes about themselves. Amelia burned up with an incredible fever, and Desiree was freezing cold to the touch. At first, the people who ran the girl's home thought they were sick. But when both girls sneezed, Amelia let out a burst of fire, and Desiree let out a small shower of ice. Fearing for the safety of the other girls, the twins were arranged to be transported to a different home. But they never went. That night, the girls ran away and found an empty apartment to live in. There, they spent a majority of their time learning how to control their new found powers. But Desiree knew they couldn't stay cooped up forever. Even though it was against her sister's wishes, Desi enrolled them in Metro High.

The twins have just started Metro High and also do a few odd jobs here and there to pay for supplies and keep food in the house. They also practiced their powers in secret, away from prying eyes. But as of late, a certain social worker has been drifting in and out of their sights. She's even tried to bribe them by buying them cell phones and even paying for them to have electricity in their apartment. While the girls accepted the gestures, they have yet to meet the mystery woman. And with their unstable powers, it is crucial that the girls keep a low profile.
