Iris Margaret Fauna was born an Antelope in Oz, during a time where Animals were oppressed. She grew up in a convent when her parents died and her sister ran away. In the convent, she learned how to be a nurse and a midwife, gaining new skills that aided her later in life. As she grew up, she helped many women in Oz, safely delivering children into the world, most famously Elphaba Thropp. Helping other women was something she saw as compensation for her inability to have her own children. An activist, she strived to help herself and the other Animals have a voice. Her first husband, William, supported her until his death in a deadly massacre.

As years went by, Iris lived alone in her cottage that was in the outskirts of Munchkinland. Her home was by a beautiful lake, a lake she knew had more power than it led on. The Unnamed God and the Unionist religion were things she held close to her. Through her prayers, she was able to have two daughters through immaculate conception. Her second daughter was born a human, as her dear friend Elphaba had decided to practice a spell, temporarily making Iris a human. While pregnant with her second daughter, she travelled to London with all of her Ozian friends as she had done every year. She went to a restaurant by herself, not really feeling well that day. A man had approached her. He obviously took a liking to her. She didn't want to befriend him, as she was still grieving her first husband. She had escaped the restaurant, but she got up too quickly. She fainted when she got outside the restaurant, the man who had spoken to her catching her. He was a doctor, and he brought her to his office just to be sure she was alright. He learned she was pregnant, and he immediately felt shame. He shouldn't have flirted with her. In his mind, he believed she already had someone. When Iris woke up and saw where she was, she was frightened. However, when she became calm, she saw something in the man. She saw care and fondness. She saw she could trust him with her life, so she decided to tell him everything about Oz.

The man who became known as Charles Alexander followed Iris back to Oz. He found a decent hotel in the Emerald City. Iris would not allow him to live with her. She has her old fashion ways. Their courtship was slow at first until a newcomer to Oz had encouraged Iris to move on and be happy. Rosa Bud and her husband Edwin Drood stumbled upon Oz, and Rosa quickly became close to Iris, seeing her as a mother. It was Rosa who encouraged Charles to propose to Iris. Of course Iris couldn't refuse. She had been happy for a time, but her life became full of turmoil.

Her sister, commonly known as Madame Morrible, hated Iris. She was the oldest and she felt she deserved more than what Iris had. When Morrible ran away, she became a prostitute. It was an easy way for her and she was well liked. Once, she grew to close to one particular "client." To this day, she supposes he had good intentions. It was a spur of the moment marriage, perhaps even a fantasy fling. When she got pregnant with his child, he became very mean and violent toward her. He didn't want to have any children and he wanted her to abort her pregnancy. She wouldn't give up her child. He beat her and abused her until her body couldn't handle it anymore, causing her miscarriage. She became very bitter after that, and jealous of all that Iris had. She constantly attacked Iris but never killed her no matter how badly she wanted her dead. Iris had the Unnamed God's complete protection. Harm would come to her and she would suffer through all the pain, but she would try her best to stay strong.

Iris never aged, until after her marriage. She gave Charles four beautiful children, despite her sister causing her resurrected son, Oliver, to be born as a corpse. Rosa's adopted daughter, Lena, had been close to Iris through her troubles. Whenever Rosa wasn't around, Iris would pay special attention to Lena, knowing her young age was where children needed the most encouragement. Lena was a fairy, and Rosa lived in a land where that wouldn't be accepted. Iris knew how Lena felt. When Lena talked about her powers and asked questions, Iris would try her best to answer them as fully as she could. Whenever Lena spoke of the woman inside her head, Iris would listen and believe what she said. Iris decided it was time to meet this woman, so Iris brought Lena to Storybrooke. The woman, called Hayley, was a wonderful and caring woman that Iris saw as a very close friend. Lena also grew very close to Hayley.

When Rosa left, Iris became Lena's guardian. Lena had put her complete trust in Iris and Charles, seeing them as her grandparents. Iris wanted to make sure Lena had the best care and had a fun and healthy child. However, it was Iris that had almost ruined Lena's happiness.

Through the suffering in all the years, Iris chewed pinlobble leaves to help her sleep. She used this plant on rare occasions, only using it if her patients truly needed it. However, she began to use them for herself, and it became an addiction. She would overdose sometimes, making herself ill. There were periods she would stop, but she would relapse again.

Iris chewed them excessively when Lena had fallen off the roof of her cottage. A storm had came and wet Lena's wings. She went to fly off but she fell, breaking her leg. Iris continuously blamed herself, her own guilt eating away at her. Lena had asked her one night to sleep beside her and keep her company. Lena had made Iris promise to never leave her no matter what. Iris made her promise, but chewed her pinlobble leaves right after Lena fell asleep. Lena woke up the next morning to find an unconscious Iris, not waking up to anything. Lena feared she had killed Iris and screamed for her grandfather. Charles carried Iris out and took her to a rehab in Gilliken, keeping her there until her treatment was finished. Before Iris left, Lena placed one of her dolls in Iris' lap just to assure herself of her grandmother's return. Iris came back home with the doll, but things were never the same between Iris and Lena. The trust between them was broken and Iris would sometimes break down and isolate herself. Lena wasn't the only one affected. Iris' younger children, Oliver and Evangeline, tended to be cautious around her, making Iris isolate herself even more. She would lay in bed all day and never move. The children would visit her in her bedroom, and they tried to encourage her to get up. Iris knew she still had to be a mother. Eventually, she was able to stop isolating herself and the pinlobble leaves were well hidden away.

Iris was in the kitchen making supper when it happened. The ground began to shake. She looked out the window and saw some trees fall and she heard people screaming. She felt Lena clutch her skirts. She asked her what was going on, but Iris couldn't answer. She hid under the kitchen table and held Lena tight. She prayed Charles would take care of the other children and that her friends would be alright. The shaking became worse until she couldn't hear anything but a ringing sound in her ears. Her boiling pot of soup had fallen on the floor, the hot liquid spilling everywhere. She closed her eyes tightly, praying for everyone to be alright. When the shaking finally stopped, she immediately called out for Charles, but she heard no response. She looked at her hands that were clutching onto Lena. The wrinkles were gone and so were the age spots. Her skin was smooth as it was before she met Charles, which only meant one thing. She couldn't think about it at that moment. She had young Lena to worry about. She carefully stood up from under the table and went outside, carrying Lena. She didn't know where she was, but she knew she wasn't in Oz anymore.
