Alena, commonly known as Lena, was born in Carnation, Washington on May 15, 2008. She had two loving parents, who doted on her. When she was a little older, she became an older sister. She loved the new baby so much, and could not wait for the day that she would be able to play with her.
One day, the small house was engulfed in a tragic fire. Lena was in the backyard playing with her doll when the fire broke out, and she ran. She was only three years old. After running for what felt like hours, the small child sat down in a meadow, curling into a ball and falling asleep quickly.
Late that night, a neighbor had come up the path. She had seen the smoke and wanted to check on the family that was so close to her. As she was walking, the flowers in the meadow, which had covered the sleeping child to give her protection, moved out of the way. It was almost as if they knew this woman would be a safe person to help the young girl.
The woman recognized her, and gently picked her up. She knew that Lena's family was gone, and that the child was clearly showing signs of magic. Flowers do not choose to protect just anyone.
She thought for a long time before settling on what would be best for Lena. There was a world, far away, that openly had magic. The young girl would be safest there, away from people of Earth.
The next morning, a woman who called herself Narina woke to find the young child sleeping on her doorstep. Narina ran the orphanage in the land known as OZ. It was not uncommon for children to be left with no explanation. The girl was small. She was clothed in a pink sundress, and covered in stains. Her dark hair was in two small ponytails, though it was clear they had been made hours ago, and the girl's hair was now a tangled mess. In her small arms, she held a baby doll.
Narina woke the child up, shaking her gently. "Good morning, little girl. What's your name?"
The child's chestnut eyes fluttered open, and she clearly became very confused. "Lena..." She did not seem focused on answering the question so much as getting away from here.
The woman gently picked the child up, taking her inside so she would not escape. "Lena. Do you have any idea how you got here?"
The child shook her head.
"Well, you're going to stay here now. Come, sweet thing." She took the small hand in hers, careful not to lose the doll, and lead the girl up the stairs to her new room.
Over the next two years, Lena grew into a bubbly young girl. She was generally positive about everything, though the other children did not seem to like her very much. Her only friend was a woman called Hayley, whom everyone assumed was an imaginary friend. She lived in Lena's head, and would talk to her and give her advice. The adults assumed she had been made up by the child to compensate for the other children disregarding her.
Lena's favorite thing to do during the day was sit in the garden. She would sit and talk to the plants for hours if left unattended. She seemed convinced that they could understand her, and that they liked her.
After some time, a woman with blonde curls came to the orphanage. She saw the child sitting in the garden and came to greet her.
"Hello... What's your name?"
The child was startled, looking up at the new face. "I'm Lena. Who're you?"
The woman smiled softly, taking the small hands in her own. "My name is Rosa. How old are you, sweet thing?"
"Five. I'll be six in May."
Rosa was taken by this child, and she was soon visiting every day. Lena looked forward to her visits, which would consist of eating pasta in her bedroom, and playing games. The child was fascinated by Rosa's funny accent, which she insisted was because she derived from a strange land, called England.
After these visits went on for a while, Rosa decided to ask Lena if she wanted to stay with her and her family. She would be gaining four sisters and a brother, as well as a new set of parents. Of course, Lena agreed. A family sounded wonderful to her.
The child got along in her new house. She had an older brother, who was married and had his own little girl. There were the twins, Anastasia and Drizella. Her favorite older sister was Ariel, because she was a mermaid and she was the nicest out of all the girls. She also had one younger sister. Matilda was a lot like Lena. She could do magic as well, and the two got along very well.
Sadly, Matilda grew up much faster than Lena did, as people of Ozian blood grow faster than those of Earth blood. Even though she was almost old enough to live alone, she still doted on the little girl, protecting her from their incompetent parents. Rosa was terrified of many things, including, but not limited to, water, poppies, and piano music. Their father, Edwin, was almost never home. When he was, he would not pay much attention to his children. Lena spent most of her days with her grandparents, where she started learning basic math and writing.
Before the start of first grade, Rosa told her younger girls that she wanted them to go to school in England, at the school she went to as a child. Lena would come home every night, but Matilda, now going by Maddie, would live there, and be taught to be a lady. The girls agreed, willing to do anything to make their mother happy.
Both girls hated the school. Maddie didn't like being separated from her family most of the time, and Lena didn't like that reading lessons stopped. Maddie had been better at reading since they were small children, and she wanted to be just as good. This school consisted of sewing, dancing, and posture. The other children were learning music, but Rosa had made it clear that she didn't want her daughters learning anything involving a piano.
Feeling horribly left out as the only six year old not learning to play piano, Lena went to her grandmother. She knew she could play, and started getting secret lessons from her after school.
One day, Rosa and Edwin decided they were moving to England permanently. Lena, having grown wings and discovered that she could fly, did not want to live in a land that she would not be accepted. So, her parents went to England, and Lena moved in with her grandparents, Iris and Charles. She continued going to school in England for a while, but finally, Iris arranged for the girls to come back to Oz for school, where they could be with children who would understand them.
Occasionally, Iris took Lena to Maine to visit Hayley, who turned out to be real. When she first started going to her grandmother's house, the woman realized that the child was indeed a fairy. The person she was communicating with was real, and could communicate with the child telepathically.
Eventually, things fell into a pretty regular pattern. Lena attended school regularly, and she quickly learned to appreciate living with so many people. She continued to be cautious, having learned from experience that just because people /said/ that they loved her and would never leave, didn’t necessarily mean that was the truth. But she was getting there. And then one day, everything changed…
She wasn’t sure what, but she could tell something was wrong. One second, she sat on her bed, reading her newest book for what might be the thousandth time, and the next…everything was moving. She quickly set the book down on the bedside table and grabbed Friella, clutching the baby doll tightly as she made her way down the stairs. It was difficult to move, but she found her grandmother and quickly climbed on her, clinging to her like a lifeline.
“What’s happening?” she asked, her voice muffled through her own fear as well as Iris’s dress.
“I’m not sure. Just hold tight to me.”
The pair held each other, both shaking. They could hear the screams in the distance, but they wouldn’t let go of each other. Suddenly, Lena having no idea how, it felt as though they were on some sort of amusement park ride. She held onto her grandmother tighter, the baby doll almost crushed between the two of them. She didn’t dare open her eyes, because she was scared of what she might see. Suddenly, all the movement stopped, including the shaking feeling that was happening since she’d come downstairs. As she pulled away from Iris, trying to take in her surroundings, only one thought crossed her mind. ‘Where /are/ we?’ This certainly wasn’t anywhere she had seen before, and she didn’t know what to make of it.
