Valerie Vaughn, the daughter to William Vaughn, was born into a life of crime. Her father founded the Nightshade Street Gang along with his two younger brothers when he was just 19 years old. The gang grew rapidly over the next years, earning a reputation for their intimidation tactics, violence, and use of the deadly plant Nightshade to poison and kill their enemies. Their gang activity shifted from utilizing extortion tactics to smuggling elicit substances, like drugs and unmarked weaponry. Members of the gang all came from street backgrounds, but brought all kinds of different skills. The brothers, for example, had elemental control that they used to kill or intimidate others, though they were also skilled in fist to fist fighting as well. Her father had control of fire, and his brothers had control of magnetism and ice. These abilities were not ones they’d been born with, but were acquired after making a deal with a shadow sorcerer, essentially offering a part of their human life force in exchange for these abilities.
When Valerie was born, her father made the same pact with her soul, and had the powers of lightning and fire bestowed upon her.
She took to the gang life fast, and it wasn’t long before she was a proven member. She was an even more adept fighter than her father had been in his youth, and became the go to person to deal with rats or potential problems within the group. Even fellow gang members were surprised at how capable and fearless she had proven to be, wondering if her lack of remorse stemmed from the fact that a larger portion of her soul had been forfeited for her abilities. Regardless of why, she was as tough as they came. Her father and uncles decided that when their time came to retire, she would take over to lead the gang.
Everything was going according to plan, until their gang was infiltrated by an informant. When Valerie caught on, she met with the man in secret and threw him from the top of Steam City’s tallest building. What she didn’t realize is the man had a tape recorder concealed on his person, and everything she said and did was captured. Miraculously, the device survived the fall, and the police were able to use it to arrest her. She fought the arrest with everything she had and managed to seriously injure two officers, but when dealing with such a high-level and dangerous criminal, the police always come prepared.
Though awaiting trial, Valerie was sent to Steam City Prison, where their methods to suppress magic would provide the safest holding. She is currently spending her first two weeks in isolation to ensure the magic suppressing drugs take full effect before she can be introduced to general population.
